My Best Room With a View Moments Around the World

We’re all guilty of dreaming, aren’t we?

When I’m not traveling or planning the next getaway, I often take great pleasure in daydreaming, looking back on my travels and drooling all over those mental Kodak moments.

So while I’m plotting the best itinerary for a Hong Kong Microadventure, (stick around) and dreaming of the white sand beaches of the Maldives (more to come) I’ll leave you with the roll credits of my Best Room With a View moments around the world.

Dream on!

1. Cape Town, South Africa

table Mountain view at Marriot Crystal Towers Hotel in Cape Town

Room with a Table Mountain view in Cape Town.

On top of the spectacular panoramic view over Table Mountain, Marriott Crystal Towers also gives you:

  • Champagne welcome drink while you’re waiting at check-in – actual champagne. It’s the little things…
  • Floor to ceiling unobstructed view of Table Mountain to greet you as you wake up
  • Quirky and spacious cylindrical shower in the middle of the room
  • Spectacular rooftop pool to take advantage of the spectacular views while soaking in sunlight

Combining our stay at Marriott Crystal Towers with the Franschhoek WineTram experience was part of the things why South Africa is now in our top 5 best trips ever.

2. Penedes, Spain: Room with a Vineyard

Room with a view at Cava Hotel Mastinell

Easily the best design I’ve come across, our room with a vineyard view at Cava Hotel MasTinell made for a perfect (cashed in late) Christmas present. The highlights here include:

  • staying in a five star, boutique design hotel which only has 13 rooms
  • very spacious 35 sq meter room with the perfect finish: a gigantic round window overlooking the vineyards
  • the complimentary bottle of cava and nibbles in the minibar
  • the comfortable poster king size bed

3. Kruger Park, South Africa: Room with a Zoo

And hand-written bedtime stories. And a Baboon family.

Gomo Gomo Lodge has free standing lodges for guests to enjoy the feeling of being in the great outdoors, while still keeping it safe and comfy. Our lodge had floor to ceiling glass doors and a private deck, overlooking a tree housing a large family of baboons.

And these are not your typical ‘urban monkeys’ one often sees roaming around Thailand’s cave temples. No, we’re talking real baboons here. Some thirty-something of them, complete with a Hulk-ass leader of the pack.

4. Cardona, Spain: Room with a Castle Tower

One of my recent travels took me to another gem: a room with(in) a 9th century medieval Castle, and with the perfect view over the Castle Tower at Parador de Cardona, some 100km outside of Barcelona.

Tip: If you want to enjoy the view, ask for room 711. (for thrill seekers, room 712 is said to be haunted by the ghost of a grief-struck woman  – if you believe in such things)

5. Berlin, Germany: Room with an Aquarium

Then there was this room with an Aquarium view, at the Insta-worthy  Radisson Blu Hotel in Berlin. One of my top picks when it comes to rooms with a view over the world’s largest freestanding aquarium, the 25-meter tall AquaDom.

One million liters of saltwater go into the cylindrical aquarium.

Unfortunately, the lights go out at 9 PM, else I’d have spent my nights mezmerized by the myriad of tropical fish swimming in the blue dome.

6. Giza, Egypt: Room with a Pyramid

If you want to plan the perfect 24h visit to Egypt’s pyramids, the room with a Pyramid (or three) at the Great Pyramid Inn will have to be part of your plans.

While it’s far from being a luxury hotel, this accommodation with an aparthotel vibe, promises views just like in the MasterCard commercial: priceless.

7. Khao Sok, Thailand: Room with a Jungle

room with a view

Ah, the Khao Sok River Lodge! this eco-friendly floating hotel of the very few reasons I enjoyed our otherwise unimpressive 2-week vacation in Thailand.

My only regret there: spending only one night under the perfect star-splashed skies! Just look at that place..

8. Ubud, Indonesia: Room with a Pool

A giant, private pool. At The Payogan Villa Resort and Spa in Ubud, Bali. You can read more about tips to get this very room here: Bali-laziness, Fireflies & Shooting Stars.

9. La Hulpe, Belgium: Room with a Forest

Want to feel like in a tree house, but with all of the luxury of a five-star hotel? Then you have to try Dolce La Hulpe, less than 15 km outside of Brussels. Highlights also include:

  • one of the best breakfasts I’ve tried
  • the forest trail to the Hulpe castle
  • their Spa: Cinq Mondes

Bonus points: Airbnb

Taupo: Room with a Lake

BnB Number 10 is by far the best bed and breakfast I’ve ever stayed in. Our room perched on a hill overlooking Lake Taupo, complemented by the friendliness of our host, her delicious home-baked cookies and the plentiful breakfast, all managed to make the shortest trip with the longest flight perfect.

The king size bed + the #loveTaupo sunset views = the best finishing to soothe our aching bodies from the taxing Tongariro hike

Reykjavik: Room with an Aurora

Room with an Aurora, because you often get that as a perk when you travel to Iceland in December.

We stayed in the ideal AirBnb one could want – if one’s secret plan is to snuggle up indoors and see the spectacular Panoramic New Year’s Eve fireworks, from the comfort of the house’s attic.
